The History Of Shoes Through Time

Come with us understanding the history of the shoes!

Back In The Days – Shoes Industry

It was during the excavation of the Tianyuan cave near Beijing that scientists concluded that shoes were already being made 40,000 years ago!

The first sewn shoes appeared in the late Middle Ages. In the beginning, the first shoes were made of wood and had a clog shape. However this material was soon replaced by something softer, like animal skin.

In the 16th century, heels became fashionable! The purpose of more fashionable shoes was to keep the feet of high society ladies away from the dirt of the floor. The heel was also very pragmatic. People only had to replace the heel when it was worn. Shouldn’t we copy the ideas of our ancestors?

Industrialization

Industrialization led to the first mass production of shoes from 1830 onwards. The invention of the sewing machine made the emergence of the shoe industry possible. What had previously been a purely craft activity, where shoes were produced individually, became an industry focused on mass production.

Until the mid-19th century, shoes were made identically for the right and left foot. The models used for manufacturing were unique. You did not buy a shoe that fit your foot, your foot adapted to the shoe as you wore it. With the industrialisation of the 19th century, the production processes were refined and the length and width dimensions that are still valid today were created.

The first Converse was born in 1908. Two-tone sandals invaded shoe wardrobes in the 1950s.

Today, shoes come in an infinite number of models, shapes and colours to meet everyone’s expectations. Today, wearing a pair of men’s skate trainers or women’s high-top trainers is no longer a way of categorising a particular social status. Shoes are simply fashion accessories like any other. However, it is important to choose them carefully. In addition to their practicality and aesthetics, a lot of credit is also given to the performance of each model and their robustness.

Footwear has always been a means of displaying social status!
