10 Shoes to Wear With Summer’s Biggest Dress Trends

Summer is just around the corner, and while we may not be traveling or attending many fun gatherings like in summer’s past, we still want to look and feel good in summer’s chicest pieces. One item that’s going to be on heavy rotation this upcoming season is unquestionably? Dresses. There are plenty of cool trends out there to suit every sartorial taste—from puff sleeves and crochet fabrics to open-back frocks and voluminous silhouettes. Which poses the question: What shoes should we be pairing with all our cool dresses this summer?

Below, we’re sharing some of the chicest footwear trends that will look gorgeous with your frocks this warm-weather season. From sporty sandals to retro sneakers, consider pairing one of these cool pairs below with your minis, midis, or maxis.

Chic Flip-Flops

This season, flip-flops are getting an elevated upgrade with chic details such as flatform silhouettes and luxe leather fabrics. Designers have released luxe versions of the controversial trend. (We’re particularly loving The Row and Prada’s right now.) Whether you wear flats or thong sandals with a heel, if you want to avoid a beach-ready look, pair them with sleek and polished dresses such as rib knit midi dresses or silky slips.

Sporty Sandals

Sporty sandals have been trending for a few years now, and the trend shows no signs of slowing down. While a classic black pair will never go out of style, this summer, we’re seeing fashion girls wearing the comfy flatform sandals in fun colors, designs, and adornments to spruce up their voluminous dresses or sleek midis.

Rainbow Hues

Nothing puts us in the summertime mood quite like a bright and bold pair of colorful sandals. We’ve seen orange and green hues in particular pop up all over Instagram and at our favorite retailers, which is not surprising since they were prevalent on the S/S 2020 runways. Don’t be afraid to pair them with an equally bold printed dress this summer.

TREND | Backless Loafers

With fall fashion on the rise backless loafers, or mules, may be your best bet. They’ve been worn recently by celebrities such as Emma Roberts and Olivia Palermo as well as fashion insiders.

The shoe style can literally be worn with almost anything (jeans! dresses! sweaters!) and can easily be slipped on or off. While the style comes with or without heels, the flat version is comfortable enough to wear on less formal occasions, but the look is decidedly chicer than a pair of dated ballet flats. The open back provides a cooling sensation, while the preppy style is on point with what’s coming up in fall fashion.

If there’s one shoe style that will see you through from Monday through to Sunday, it’s backless loafers. The best way to wear them on weekends is with ankle-grazing denim or simple dresses. Our only style rule is don’t wear with tights—too likely to fly off your feet and also look a bit strange on your heels. Scroll down to see our edit; these styles are worth a touch of frostbite.

TREND | Western Boots

I don’t need to tell you cowboy boots are back (that’s old news now). However, you might be wondering how to wear them. Who would have thought we’d see the return of the Western silhouette? The Western silhouette is dominating this year, and you either opt for a subtle cowboy boot or go all-out Dallas. Then the animal print trend has made its way into footwear, as snakeskin boots are having a moment. Many of the styles out there have Cuban heels and square toes in black leather, which give them a modern update.

HOW TO WEAR |Dr Marten Boots

Comfy, edgy and trendy the Dr Marten boots are the must have at the streetwear for cold seasons. The British brand has been a fashion go-to for decades, cropping up in the wardrobes of both fashion’s elite and casual comfort-seekers around the world. Once combat boots were typically worn by young and rebellious generations. But now is easy to see a lot of stylish people and celebrities pairing them with skinny jeans or silk dress by the streets.

When off-duty, Dakota Johnson pairs the boots to a destructured men’s blazer and a check shirt, while Jessica Alba opts for a blazer and a light graphic long dress. Gigi Hadid teams her boots with a bomber and a sporty cropped top while model Behati Prinsloo wears hers with a fitted mini dress at a party or with distressed jeans.

Find out now ho to wear your Dr. Martens boots!

TRENDS | White Boots

1960s go-go style, embellished with bedazzled heels or even just in their most classic of interpretations, white boots are stomping back into the trends. A pair of sleek black boots will always be a classic, as will a pair of crisp white ones, but there’s just something about the latter style that feels particularly fresh. Black boots tend to look a bit harsh, especially when paired with lighter colors on top—think light-wash jeans, white trousers, etc.—whereas white ankle boots offer up a softer, airier way to ground an outfit. From combat boots to Kitten Heel Booties, these trendy white boots are a definite staple for your fall wardrobe.
